Jakarta – BRIN Public Relations. The National Research and Innovation Agency through the Research Center for Plant Conservation and Botanical Gardens signed a research cooperation agreement with PT Nusa Persada Resources (NPR) in the context of saving flora biodiversity in Central Kalimantan, Monday (21/2).

Head of BRIN’s Research Center for Plant Conservation and Botanical Gardens, Sukma Surya Kusumah said that the signing was carried out as a form of BRIN’s presence in saving biodiversity and its ecosystem from the threat of extinction, especially in mining areas.

These efforts will produce plant specimens for ex-situ collection at the Purwodadi Botanical Gardens, local plant seeds for enrichment in the reclamation and conservation area of PT NPR, references related to plant diversity management in concession areas, and scientific publications.

“The mining process must still be accompanied by sustainable use efforts, namely by restoring the forest ecosystem,” he said.

Sukma added that in the future this collaboration could provide literacy and understanding of local communities, especially in mining areas and the strategies for saving and utilizing them.

Meanwhile, Director of PT Nusa Persada Resources, Ignatius Wurwanto said that his office has for long built synergies in saving Indonesia’s biodiversity, especially in mining areas since 2009 as a form of its concern in the maintenance and preservation of biodiversity before the mining process takes place. This year, biodiversity rescue activities will be carried out in mining concession areas in Central Kalimantan.

“We want to preserve biodiversity before the mining process which will then be reintroduced in the post-mining areas,” he said. (ADD/BRIN)
