The draft policy related to the National Long-Term Development Plan for the next 25 years is expected to be an input for the National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS) as the main partner of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). This was conveyed by BRIN’s Acting Director of Politics, Law, Defence and Security, Moch. Nurhasim, in the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Defence Strategy for the Next 25 Years (Evaluation of Minimum Essential Force/MEF), in Bogor, Wednesday (24/3).

“The process of drafting the policy, which must be completed in 2023 needs inputs and ideas both internally and externally, such as from the Ministry of Defence and other competent resource persons in the defence sector,” said Nurhasim. “The output of this research is in the form of a policy paper which will later be given to stakeholders related to the field of Defence and the Indonesian Military,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Defence Strategy of the Indonesian Ministry of Defence, Brigadier General Oktaheroe Ramsi said that the government’s full support in budget politics is very important, especially in the fulfilment of the primary weapons system.

“I hope that in the future there will be a solution, and that the government’s budget policy is more in favor of the defence sector,” said Heroe.

On the other hand, the Director of Defence and Security of the Deputy for Politics, Law, Defence, and Security at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas said that Indonesia’s current defence budget is IDR 130 trillion or around 5% of the state budget, the same as the defence budget of China, Australia and the UK.

This FGD is expected to give provide a complete understanding of MEF and map out strategic issues and problems, in addition to creation of research design concepts that are important in drafting policies related to the defence strategy for the next 25 years, in order to realize the national goals of the Indonesian nation.

For information, this the FGD was also attended by resource persons from representatives of the Indonesian Army Headquarters, Army Headquarters, Navy Headquarters, Air Force Headquarters, academics and defence observers. (sug/ed: drs)
