Jakarta – BRIN Public Relations. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) through its Deputy for Research and Innovation Utilization and PT. Focustindo Cemerlang signed a patent license agreement for the processing of irradiated pericardial membranes and radiation sterilized demineralized bone grafts. The license agreement signed directly by BRIN Acting Deputy for Research and Innovation Utilization, Mego Pinandito and the President Director of PT Focustindo Cemerlang, Sumardi was held at the B.J. Habibie building, Thamrin, Jakarta, on Friday (18/02).

The technology for processing the manufacture of irradiated pericardial membrane is the result of invention by BRIN’s Research and Technology Center for Isotope and Radiation Applications which already has a patent (IDP000063846) registered with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property in the form of a License Agreement. Using the technology derived from BRIN, pericardial membrane will be produced by PT. Focustindo Cemerlang which will then market it for utilization by the community through its distribution network.

“We will continue to encourage the industry to really take advantage of the research and innovations produced by BRIN. In essence, BRIN is strengthening the research and innovation ecosystem not only in terms of how we conduct research but also how we organize all of these components to be effective. The research is strengthened by various facilities that will continue to be developed while the researchers are encouraged to continue to improve their capability by collaborating with industrial partners,” said Mego.

Pericardial membrane is derived from the covering membrane of bovine heart with a high collagen content. Collagen is a compound that is widely found in the body and has the ability to accelerate wound healing. Thus, the pericardial membrane is very good for Guided Tissue/Bane Regeneration (GTR/GBR) in dental applications. This material is sensitive to temperature. One needs to use radiation techniques with gamma rays or electron beams to sterilize it.

Acting Head of Isotope and Radiation Application Research and Technology Center, Roziq Himawan, who was also present at the license signing event, said that in the future researchers must contribute from the beginning. Ideas for development should come from industrial partners who have relations with customers, so that the customers’ needs can be identified and absorbed directly by the researchers. This effective research is hoped to increase the number of patents with the producing innovations.

“Integration of various R&D units into BRIN is not only to create critical mass, but also as an effort to release as soon as possible the inventions that have been produced by researchers. With the increasing number of license signings, it is hoped that it will become the magnet for other inventors. This also gives a new spirit to researchers, as there are government schemes that have been launched in the form of incentives for researchers, so hopefully this can improve innovation in the future, “said Roziq.

The President director of PT Focustindo Cemerlang said that use of the results of this research is also an effort to reduce dependence on foreign products. “We are grateful to be given the opportunity to work with BRIN in the context of applying the results of research by BRIN scientists.
