Jakarta – BRIN Public Relations. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is currently conducting research and development (R & D) related to use of Porang tubers (Amorphophallus muelleri) . Porang tuber is a type of local plant native to Indonesia with very potential content but not optimally utilized. Lulu Eki Daysita, a researcher from BRIN Center for Agro-Industry Technology, is currently developing a technology for processing probiotic powder drink with porang tubers as the raw material.

“Porang tubers have high content of glucomannan, which can be utilized by probiotic bacteria,” said Lulu, when interviewed by BRIN Public Relations, Tuesday (15/02).

He said that the proposed research design is application of probiotics and prebiotics at the same time or called synbiotics, which can be developed into powdered drink. One of prebiotic food sources can be used for powdered drinks is porang tubers.

This powdered drink is expected to be an alternative functional food that can be used as an immunomodulator, which is good for health. In future, the results of this research will produce a synbiotic drink from Indonesian local raw materials that has added value and is functional.

Lulu’s research under the title in international publication: Technology for Processing Probiotic Powdered Drink from Porang Tubers (Amorphophallus Muelleri) as the raw material was declared passed the selection of BRIN’s Engineering Science Research Organization Program (OR IPT).

Development of Appropriate Technology Research

Lulu’s research is classified under the category of Appropriate Technology Development (TTG), and is an effort to improve the ability of technological innovation which is highly needed in the campaign of towards advanced Indonesia. TTG innovation has an inclusive character, and plays an important role in technological innovation capabilities which will have an impact on the country’s development.

Development of TTG research in the era of industrial revolution 4.0 must be carried out with comprehensive research from upstream to downstream (design, manufacturing up to testing), and supported by the facilities of technology , precise equipment and process, and adequate laboratories so that the products released have advantage and competitiveness.

TTG’s research and innovation is focused on equipment technology by applying the concept of precision engineering, which is supported by engineering technology for food processing, agriculture, fisheries, energy, transportation, and so forth, and strengthened by automation systems and testing mechanism.
Therefore, BRIN OR IPT provides the opportunity for researchers within BRIN to participate in the Call for Proposal for the Home Program managed by OR IPT, as an effort to improve and create a strong and sustainable research-based economic foundation.

The main objective of these four programs is to enhance the competence of BRIN researchers in several fields, among others, to help industries and develop Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and technology innovation-based creative industries and business model innovation in the field of battery-based electric vehicle technology, licensed by Indonesia, medical equipment and detection, TTG, and advanced materials.
