Jakarta – BRIN Public Relations. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) have agreed to strengthen cooperation in terrorism prevention based on the need for research related to nationality, especially on contemporary issues (Indonesian and contemporary dynamics). Head of BRIN, Laksana Tri Handoko, said that there is potential for research to support the duties and functions of BNPT with regard to countering terrorism, radicalism, and various activities that lead to disintegration of the nation.

“There are many things that can be done from research activities to understand terrorism from the aspect of humanities, and technology, and how we can strengthen prevention through application of technology. We allow BNPT to use the research and innovation resources available here at BRIN,” explained the Head of BRIN during the agenda for the signing of a memorandum of understanding between BRIN and BNPT, Thursday (03/02), at the BJ Habibie Building, 24th floor, M.H Thamrin.

Handoko explained that similar collaborations with BNPT were once carried out in 2014 with the Political Research Center and in 2017 and the Remote Sensing Center. “My data shows that in 2014 the Agency and the Center for Political Research produced a Module for Prevention of Terrorism, and 2017 with the Sensory Center on provision of satellite data (photos) for forest areas as area mapping and reconnaissance of suspected objects and subjects,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Head of BNPT Komjen. Pol. Boy Rafli Amar explained that research-based counter terrorism is one of the steps in the BNPT mission. Through this collaboration, he believes that with the support from BRIN, the quality of the results of research and use of counter-terrorism technology will improve.

“We are very confident that we can contribute the results of research, which can be even as mitigation against the development of radical viruses and terrorism, and we can pass them to the wider community. We wish to realize this national goal through synergy, to protect Indonesia and the glory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia,” explained the Head of BNPT.

For information, the purpose of this collaboration is to create synergy and integration in the implementation and achievement of functions, and to step up the active roles of both agencies in accordance with their respective functions in preventing and countering terrorism in Indonesia. In addition, this collaboration, which is scheduled for the next 3 years, plays a role in supporting the RPJMN in the field of radicalism and terrorism which is deemed in need of research and survey data to produce the Radicalism Potential Index and Terrorism Risk Index in order to improve the nation’s awareness.
