Irradiated Pericardial Membrane from BRIN research will soon be Produced Commercially

Jakarta, February 18, 2022. One of the R&D products of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in the form of irradiated pericardial membrane will be produced commercially by PT. Focustindo Brilliant. Related thereto, BRIN and PT. Focustindo Cemerlang signed a licensing cooperation agreement at the BJ. Habibie Building, Jakarta, Friday (18/02).
The cooperation was signed by Acting Deputy for Research and Innovation Utilization, Mego Pinandito and President Director of PT. Focustindo Cemerlang, Sumardi for the term of 10 years. PT. Focustindo Cemerlang, is a company engaging in the field of medical devices and home care.
The cooperation between PT. Focustindo Cemerlang and BRIN relates to the use of inventions made by the Research and Technology Center for Isotope and Radiation Application (PRTAIR), namely the Process of Making Irradiated Pericardium Membranes which already have a patent (IDP000063846) and are registered with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property in the form of a License Cooperation Agreement.
PRTAIR researcher Basril Abas explained that pericardial membrane derives from the covering of a cow’s heart with high collagen content. “Collagen is a compound found in large amount in the body so that its biocompatibility in host tissues is very high and so is its ability to speed up wound healing,” said Basril.
Basril continued that pericardial membrane is very good for Guided Tissue/Bane Regeneration (GTR/GBR) in dental applications. This material is sensitive to temperature, therefore, radiation techniques with gamma rays or electron beams are used to sterilize it.
Basril explained that the sterilization process using gamma ray radiation will not cause changes in temperature. “During the sterilization process using radiation the temperature does not increase also known as cold sterilization. In addition, sterilization with irradiation can be carried out on the final product,” he explained.
Radiated pericardial membrane can be produced in several sizes such as 1.5 x 1 cm, 2 x 1.5 cm, 3 x 2 cm, or as needed.
Radiation sterile pericardial membrane have been applied in the dental field, namely in bone augmentation in which the radiation pericardial membrane functions as barrier membrane between the soft tissue of gums and the hard tissue of alveolar bone as Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR). Radiated pericardial membrane can also be used in alveolectomy as Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR).
Under this collaboration, PT. Focustindo Cemerlang will produce Irradiated Pericardium Membrane using technology from BRIN which has been proven to be effective. Basril hopes that the Pericardium Membrane products can be marketed and utilized by the public through the distribution network owned by PT. Focustindo Brilliant.
