Jakarta – BRIN Public Relations. The National Research and Innovation Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (BRIN) and the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia (Defence Ministry) signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday (02/03). The memorandum of understanding, which was signed directly by the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto and the Head of BRIN, Laksana Tri Handoko, is related to research and innovation and their use in supporting the national defense.

In his speech, Prabowo said that scientists are the very big hope of the nation. The scientific fields studied in the form of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) are considered as the future for the nation. The sovereignty of the nation and country in the 21st century ultimately depends on the strength that Indonesia has in the STEM fields.

“We are very interested in collaborating with BRIN and support the ideas presented by BRIN. We also consider the cooperation agreed upon today is very strategic. We need individuals who master the technology that can bring us sovereignty in this 21st century. Because you are the brain of the country, you are the hope,” Prabowo told BRIN at the General Sudirman building of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense.

The scope of the memorandum of understanding signed by the two parties for a period of 3 (three) years includes organization of research and innovation in the field of defense, utilization of research and innovation results in the field of defense, development of human resource competencies, use of owned facilities and infrastructure, as well as other activities agreed upon by both parties in accordance with the duties and functions under the provisions of laws and regulations.

On the same occasion, Handoko said that one of the objectives of the establishment of BRIN is to integrate research activities managed by the government. BRIN was formed as a purely civilian entity so that it would be easier and more flexible to conduct research activities and collaborate with various parties. However, BRIN remains focused and supports the defense industry through the defense industry holding in the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises of the Republic of Indonesia. In addition, BRIN also has a program to strengthen the competence of Human Resources through the Degree By Research program that can respond to the challenges ahead.

“We are ready to support, even make BRIN as the R&D of the defense industry holding. It is impossible for us to compete without technology-based product development. BRIN exists for all parties including related ministries/institutions and industries/business actors in Indonesia. We have to make product differentiation based on science and technology to be more competitive, including in the defense industry,” said Handoko.

In addition to the signing of the memorandum of understanding, on the same occasion a cooperation agreement was also signed between the two parties related to research and development in the defense sector. This cooperation agreement was signed directly by Julexi Tambayong as Head of the Research and Development Agency of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, and Mego Pinandito as Acting Deputy for Research and Innovation Utilization of BRIN.

Also present on the event were BRIN officials, Acting Secretary to HR I Deputy, Acting Director of Scientific Property Collection, Acting Head of the Legal and Cooperation Bureau, and officials of the Ministry of Defense, Vice Minister of Defense, Secretary General of the Ministry of Defense, Inspector General of the Ministry of Defense, Director General of Defense Potential, Director General of Defense Power, Head of Research and Development, Head of Human Resources Bureau, Head of Legal Affairs Bureau, Head of Legislation Bureau, Head of Administrative Affairs and Protocol, Head of General Affairs Bureau, and Rector of the Defense University (maa/frd)
